The drinks giant says a UK-wide deposit scheme is the key to increasing recycling rates and reducing littering. Britain’s biggest drinks manufacturer says that plastic bottles should be sold with a deposit that is returned when customers bring back the empty. Until recently Coca-Cola viewed deposits on bottles as a threat to its business. But the company now says household “kerbside” recycling has “stalled” and it can’t source enough clean plastic to meet its environmental targets. Julian Hunt, Vice-President of Coca-Cola European Partners said: “Deposits are going to play a role in how we improve packaging recovery. There is no doubt that if we get a well-designed system that works for everybody then our experience from other markets is that it improves the amount of material collected as well as the quality - and those two things are key.”

The prices of milk, meat and clothes could all soar if Britain fails to strike a free trade deal with the EU, as tariffs at the border would add to costs facing hard-pressed families. A “no deal” Brexit risks adding more than 1pc to inflation because it would leave the UK using World Trade Organization rules and taxes, according to new research. Dairy prices could rise by 8pc, meat almost 6pc, clothing 2.4pc and vehicles 5.5pc. Prices are currently rising faster than wages, harming families’ spending power. That situation is forecast to gradually reverse over the next year. However, trade on WTO rules in the event of failed negotiations with the EU will add extra taxes on imported goods from March 2019 and potentially cause real wages to fall again. The researchers said: “The overall increase in price in the affected goods is estimated to be 2.7pc, increasing the overall cost of living 0.8 to 1.1pc for a typical family, with the unemployed and families, those with children and pensioners hit hardest. This may seem a small number, but in a country in which the real incomes of ordinary families have been stagnant for several years, a loss of this order would have a significant effect on welfare.”

The sweeping purge consolidates the power of the Crown Prince and removes potential opponents to his reforms. Saudi Arabia has detained 11 princes as well as several current and former ministers, amid an anti-corruption crackdown by King Salman. Among those to be held was the prominent billionaire businessman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. The nephew of the Saudi monarch is chairman of Kingdom Holding, one of the largest shareholders in the banking giant Citigroup, which also holds a stake in Twitter. The head of the powerful National Guard and son of the late King Abdullah, Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, was also detained in the sweeping purge which consolidates the power of heir to the throne, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The crackdown came after King Salman announced the creation of a new anti-corruption committee late on Saturday night, headed by 32-year-old Prince Mohammed. It is being said that the committee was created due to the propensity of some people for abuse, putting their personal interest above public interest, and stealing public funds, after long-standing public complaints about abuse of power. King Salman said in broadcast comments: “Laws will be applied firmly on everyone who touched public money and didn’t protect it or embezzled it, or abused their power and influence. This will be applied on those big and small, and we will fear no one.” In what could be viewed as approval of the arrests, the kingdom’s most senior clerics have said it is an Islamic duty to fight corruption. The Saudi government says the newly established committee has the right to issue arrest warrants, impose travel restrictions and freeze bank accounts, as well as trace and prevent the transfer of funds or the liquidation of assets. It says the accounts of those arrested are to be frozen.
